Watch High-definition Digital TV on Your Computer
With dual format TV tuners, the WinTV-HVR-1600 lets you watch ATSC digital TV as well as QAM digital TV and analog cable TV. ATSC digital TV, which typically requires an antenna for reception, is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com.)

The WinTV-HVR-1600 also lets you watch and record QAM channels, which are unencrypted digital channels broadcast by your local cable operator. If you don't have access to digital television channels yet, you can also watch regular analog cable television. And with the included remote control, you can control your cable TV or satellite set top box.

In addition to high-definition video, the card also features a dbx-TV stereo decoder for great TV sound. The card has Composite/S-Video and audio inputs that allow for connecting VCRs or cable/satellite set top boxes and an FM radio tuner that lets you listen to your favorite FM radio broadcasts.

Your Own Personal Digital Video Recorder!
With the included software, you can easily record TV shows to your hard disk using MPEG-2. Several recording options are available depending on your playback needs; higher quality video requires more disk space. Generally, 5 GB of disk space is used per hour of ATCS digital TV recordings. Thanks to the built-in hardware MPEG-2 encoder, your PC continues to run at full speed even while recording.

With the WinTV-Scheduler software, you can easily schedule the recordings of your favorite television shows daily, weekly, or just once. You can then play back the recordings at your leisure, burn them onto CD or DVD for playback on another computer or your television, or with video editing software (not included), you can edit the shows. This is great for saving favorite movie clips, or of your favorite teams dramatic last-second win or your favorite player's grand slam.

The Hauppauge 1138 WinTV-HVR-1600 plugs into a PCI slot and is compatible with Windows Vista, XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows XP Media Center Edition. With XP-MCE and Vista, you can add the WinTV-HVR-1600 as either the primary or secondary TV tuner. The Microsoft Media Center application supports up to two TV tuners, so you can watch on channel while recording another.

Customer Review: You must be kidding

I dont know what has happend with TV card makers but they just cant seem to get it wright.

I owned some WinTV cards back in the old Windows XP early days and they worked perfectly.

Lets start with the installation.

Installed included software on Vista. The driver did not get installed properly and I would get an error each time I installed the software.

I went to the manufacture web site and got the latest software and installed it. What a mess. two different apps fighting. Any way after a system restore (I allways create a restore point now) I install the new software. OK it worked kind of. The Docs stink and the overhead the software has for HD is crazy. With a Dual 3Ghz system with Nvidia 9300 graphics card the thing eats 50-80% of the CPU. This is a sign of very poor Vid capture system. I have tried others and the same video will eat 15% of the CPU.

Lots of lock ups and very poor docs. I took it back. Skip this one if you are smart.

Customer Review: Product did not work as adverstised; Hauppauge Technical Support is horrible. Do not buy Huappauge products.

At the outset, I want to say that I am generally non-judgmental and easy-going.

A month ago, I upgraded my Windows Media center PC to Windows Vista Premium 64 bit operating system. The existing TV tuner that came with the original hardware did not work. So I decided to upgrade to a new TV tuner. I saw that Hauppauge, the maker of my old TV tuner had a new product that I could install and be able to view HD TV on my TV. I bought WinTV-HVR-1600 MCE Kit Bundle. I removed the old tuner and replaced it with the new tuner. I followed all the instructions including the latest device drivers and the PC properties/device driver said that the device was working properly. So, I decided to go to Media Center and followed the channel tuning steps. This is where the trouble began. The HD Digital TV scan identified the local channels that transmit digital signal and then started the signal intensity scan. At the first pass it showed signals that had 4 green bars. Then it went through them again and changed the strength of the same stations to 2 red bars, etc. and the scanning kept going on and on and on forever and every time it kept changing the number of green bars. Then, when I stopped it manually and went to view a channel, I got the message "TV signal not available, etc."

I called Hauppauge and their Tech Support person did not know what was going on. He asked me to download a driver file which I had already done in the first place. Then, he said that he would forward my problem to their engineer. The engineer e-mailed me asking me to send him screen shots without being specific about which ones and why. I e-mailed him back asking to be more specific. That was 3 weeks ago. I have not heard back from Hauppauge tech support.

Bottom line: I wasted about $80 on the tuner, $40 on a powered antenna and I cannot yet get any signal and the Hauppauge technical support seems to be one of the worst operations I have encountered in a long, long time. Hauppauge should be investigated for false claims and bad customer service.
